THE STORY
On Thanksgiving 2003, I lost my fiancé Randee DeMartino to cancer; she was just 29 years old. During our two year ordeal, we received an outpouring of support from the Atlanta and New York City areas to cope with $100,000 in medical bills. Words can't convey the significance of this help. As anyone who has experienced grief can attest to, the journey of healing is an individual one. In my case, it started by fulfilling a life long dream of becoming a motorcycle rider the spring after Randee passed. Forty thousand (40,000) miles later, with a couple of solo cross country trips under my belt, the therapy of being a motorcycle rider fused with my passion for golf. Inevitably, this led to the strapping of my golf clubs to my motorcycle and riding off to play distant courses, and hence the name was born…TWO WHEEL dRIVER. Additionally, as a lifelong musician and Atlanta venue manager, music has played a tremendous role for me throughout the entire ordeal, perhaps best exemplified by a series of benefit concerts we organized for Randee at Smith's Olde Bar as she fought the disease. Inspired by these real life events, TWO WHEEL dRIVER is a unique and inspiring ‘philanthropic road show’ fusing motorcycles, golf, and music to raise money for local cancer causes and families across America via The Randee Foundation, celebrity charity golf tournaments and benefit concerts. In the vein of ‘Extreme Makeover: Home Edition’ and Ewan McGregor’s ‘Long Way Round’, TWO WHEEL dRIVER is a traveling tribute to Randee and everyone else dealing with cancer. Like a 21st century ‘Magnificent Seven’, we’ve traded in horses and guns for motorcycles and golf clubs in order to do some good. Mark Augustyn |
